A follow-up meeting of the PCI Gulf South Transportation Committee with the bridge design group at MDOT was held in Jackson on November 6th. Chaired by Dave Tomley, P.E. with Thompson Engineering, the group discussion covered a wide range of topics. As with most DOT meetings, precast prestressed concrete products were discussed with a highlight on NEXT Beam technology. Recent MDOT Project RT 57 was discussed with an emphasis on the spliced girder (post tensioned) products that were used on the bridge. Dave Tomley, along with Andrea Moore from M2 Solutions, discussed corrosion mitigation/service life and life cycle analysis relative to bridge components both new and old.Using the 365 life cycle analysis program, attendees learned how various mix designs combined with corrosion inhibiting compounds can extend the life of a bridge. It was no surprise to many of us in the industry, precast performs very well when using the 365 life cycle analysis. Another topic of particular interest was the use of BrIM in bridge design. BrIM is a design software platform similar to vertical construction Building Information Modeling or BIM. Justin Walker P.E., MDOT Director of Structures State Bridge Engineer, stated that this technology is hitting the industry with lighting speed and will be a major player in the near future.
