A recent visit to Mississippi State University brought Precast 101 to 3rd and 4th year students in the School of Construction Science and School of Architecture. As a recipient of a newly awarded PCI Foundation studio grant, Assistant Professor Alexis Gregory is eager to immerse her students in the vast opportunities precast offers to the design community. During the afternoon session, the students were introduced to ALL types of precast products, an industry overview, history of precast and applications for precast in the form of project profiles. Perhaps one of the most valuable aspects of the day came when I had the opportunity to circulate around the classroom and discuss student created designs. It was during these one-on-one interactions that I was able to show the students how precast products could be substituted for a material they had chosen to create a more durable, sustainable and efficient design. It was a great day for all!
