Gate Precast Plant Tour

On a recent beautiful March day, Gate Precast in Monroeville, AL, hosted 22 Auburn University College of Building Science students. This group is part of the recently awarded PCI Foundation studio program. Dr. Amna Salman and her class received a detailed view of how architectural precast is engineered, produced and stored. PCI Gulf South would like to thank Chris Ard, Jane Martin, Nate Brooks, and all the great folks at Gate for their hospitality and effort in providing this worthwhile learning experience.

PCI Gulf South Spring Meeting

PCI Gulf South held its annual Spring meeting this year at the Golden Nugget in Lake Charles, LA. It is truly amazing how much talent we have in the precast industry outside of precast! . The musical group Analog, a local Lake Charles band, entertained the membership with music from the 60’s and 70’s. The group's bass player is Philip Miller of Alfred Miller Companies, PCI Gulf South’s Regional Representative to the Board of Directors and the President of Alfred Miller. Impressive! In addition to the wonderful entertainment provided by Analog, we would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Hosseinpour and his students for presenting on their studio program at McNeese State University. They shared some of their recent activities such as the Mini Beam competition at the Gulf Coast Student Symposium. Of a special note, this was the second time PCI Gulf South had all producer members represented at the meeting. Now that's commitment!

2024 Gulf Coast Student Symposium

The 2024 Gulf Coast Student Symposium was held at the University of New Orleans on March 8th and 9th. Although only the second year for the competition, attendance increased by 28%. Also on the increase is the amount of weight the mini-beams can hold. Last year, the heaviest load was 410 lbs. This year, we had a whopping 536 lbs. from LA Tech’s beam  who went on to  secure 3rd place. Second place went to the University of South Alabama which held 512 lbs. First place went to The University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa with a weight of 531 lbs. Not bad for beams that are 32” long and made out of mortar! The students all had fun and enjoyed the educational experience. Special thanks to Dave Tomley from Gulf Coast Prestress, Jennifer McIntire with Contech Engineered Solutions, and Diep Tu, the Executive Director from PCI Florida region.

PCI Quality Control

PCI offers training courses (QC Schools) to prepare individuals for PCI personnel certification examinations. It is important to note that passing an examination satisfies only one of the requirements of personnel certification and that the final decision on certification is made independently by the PCI Quality Assurance Department.
