Director’s Message
PCI is comprised of eleven unique chapters. Those chapters function individually and as part of the greater organization referred to as the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute. Working with ten other Directors from across the nation on items of shared interest offers me a glimpse into how other chapters operate and what is important to them. As I observed “my” group networking, discussing topics of concern, and finding solutions to issues at our recent summer meeting, I was proud to see how far we have come during the last eight years! Watching the old guard and the next generation standing shoulder to shoulder as we weave our way through the changes and tweaks all associations must make to stay relevant and solid made me realize we are heading in a good direction. Thank you to all who joined us in Point Clear, AL recently. Your presence makes a difference. Dan
Meet Our Associates:
Summitville
From its humble beginnings in 1912, the modern-day Summitville Brick has reached beyond the boundaries of the tiny little Ohio village for which it was named to become a leading force in the American ceramic tile industry. To service the precast concrete industry, Summitville Brick offers many colors and shades of thin brick. Thin Brick is made from select clays and shale chosen for their relative purity, fired strength, and proven characteristics. All thin bricks can be ordered and precision-sized to the tightest tolerances. Factory-applied waxing is also available for ease of installation and clean-up. Check out Summitville Brick and all they have to offer.

Dave Tomley Speaks to Mississippi Association of Supervisors
Dave Tomley, Chair of PCI Gulf South’s Transportation Committee, was invited to speak at the Association of Supervisors annual convention in Biloxi, MS on June 12th, 2024. Because county supervisors provide regional leadership; the association was initially formed to educate county supervisors and provide a platform for the exchange of ideas. Since many local bridges are in need of repair or replacement, the supervisors wanted more information on precast and prestressed girders' correct use, design, and availability. Overall, it was a very productive presentation and meeting with the supervisors and many questions were asked.
PCI Gulf South Summer Meeting
The summer meeting was again held at the beautiful Grand Hotel in Point Clear, AL. With its rich history dating back to the early 1900s, the updated Grand Hotel provides a perfect venue for networking, friendship, and meeting new people.
As is customary, our regional state DOT bridge designers gave us an overview of issues they are dealing with relative to design and engage the membership with back-and-forth questions and answers. I would like to personally thank Chris Guidry, Micah Dew, and Tim Colquett for taking time out of their busy schedules to attend the summer meeting and present to the members. Robert Risser, CEO and President of PCI, also addressed the membership regarding activities the national organization is engaged with. Environmental Product Declarations was a big topic. While rounding out our Transportation segment, Dave Tomley, the Chair of PCI Gulf South’s Transportation Committee, reviewed the committee's activities for the last five years. Amna Salman, Assistant Professor at Auburn University, gave the group an excellent presentation on the PCI Foundation studio program currently ongoing in the School Of Construction.
New this year was a cornhole competition sponsored and run by Master Builders Solutions and Holcim Cement. Congratulations to Rick Barnett and his grandson Jonah for winning the contest and narrowly beating Clay Hudson and Raul Cabello for the top spot. We want to thank Chris Ard, outgoing President, for his service and commitment to PCI Gulf South. A plaque and letter opener was presented to Chris at the President's Dinner.
Mississippi/Alabama Engineering Society Meeting
The Mississippi/Alabama Engineering Society held its annual joint meeting at the wonderful Beau Rivage in Biloxi, MS, on May 29th. As part of the presentation series, PCI Gulf South was asked to present on its involvement with the ASCE Gulf South Student Symposium held at the University of New Orleans this year. We had a great time at the event this year and met a few new people.
PCI Quality Control
PCI offers training courses (QC Schools) to prepare individuals for PCI personnel certification examinations. It is important to note that passing an examination satisfies only one of the requirements of personnel certification and that the final decision on certification is made independently by the PCI Quality Assurance Department.
