Sustainability and resiliency have been hot-button topics in the building industry for the last decade. Designers and owners are all looking for building materials that will withstand time… and weather. But what do sustainability and resiliency mean? If you are someone who has been affected by Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton, it would mean being able to return home after the storm and resume life as before. If you are the owner of a shop in downtown Tampa or Asheville, it would mean being able to restart your business with minimal effort. It might also mean that condo owners at the beach would have minimal disruption to their lives. Far too often, we say the words and have noble intentions, but the action never follows. I hear the same excuses all the time… building in a sustainable way costs too much, and it is far cheaper to go with a “conventional” build. Consider the cost of rebuilding a structure that’s no longer there. How much money do you lose when you can’t reopen your business and you have to repair or rebuild? It’s not an easy solution, but in reality, we already have the answers. We have to start somewhere. We have to approach building with a different mindset. Sustainability is not only a way to build,  it’s a way of thinking. Let’s do better!

Contech Engineered Solutions Plant Tour

On October 1st, Auburn University's College of Engineering students visited Contech Eng. Solutions in Pelham, AL, to witness the daily operations at a precast, prestress manufacturing plant. The students, part of Dr. Robbie Barnes's prestress class, were shown everything from mixing concrete to testing concrete, forming concrete, draping strands, prestressing strands, and placing concrete. They even got to eat pizza after a hard day’s tour! Thank you, Johnnie Hayes, Dwain Hamby, Nathan Emmerich, and Kipp Moore, for showing the students the "details" of the precast process and answering the tough questions. Thank you, Dr. Barnes, for immersing your students in our industry.

AIA Louisiana State Conference

September 19th and 20th 2024, the Louisiana State AIA Conference was held in Baton Rouge, LA. We were given the opportunity to tour the new Farm Bureau building, learn about how AI is changing the design community and learn about updates to Louisiana's building codes. Day two of the conference saw the attendees touring The Water Campus. The Campus, which includes LSU's Center for River Studies, houses a 120 foot by 90 ft scaled down model of the lower Mississippi River basin including Lake Pontchartrain and New Orleans. The model uses real data to help planners understand how to handle sediment and other aspects of the lower Louisiana area. A second structure of the Water Campus was built on top of the levee system and overlooks the Mississippi River. This structure is public and can be used for conferences or student activities. It replaced an old abandoned warehouse.

Congratulations Alabama -Team 2

We are pleased to announce that Team 2 from the University of Alabama placed third in PCI’s Big Beam Contest. The national competition, in its 24th year, teaches college students important structural engineering skills in an applied learning environment that will benefit them in their future professions. Teams of students and a faculty advisor design, build, and test a 20-foot, precast, prestressed concrete beam. Local PCI-certified precast concrete producers mentor and fabricate the beams for the teams. This year’s third place winning team is comprised of Faculty Advisor Dr. Sriram Aaleti and  team members Abdulmaliq Alawode, Anupama Kamani, Archana Kumari, Eunice Mendes, Rodrigues Farias Mello, Kunal Mohinderu, Shubham Sharma Gyawali and PCI Producer GATE Precast, Monroeville, Alabama. Awsome job everyone!

PCI Quality Control

PCI offers training courses (QC Schools) to prepare individuals for PCI personnel certification examinations. It is important to note that passing an examination satisfies only one of the requirements of personnel certification and that the final decision on certification is made independently by the PCI Quality Assurance Department.
