Recently, I started teaching a Concrete-Prestressed/Concrete class at a local trade school. As I was teaching, I quickly realized our industry has an enormous amount of definitions/acronyms/slang that are particular to our segment of the construction world.

We often take for granted that those we talk with are on a similar level to us and fail to realize they don’t have the foundational knowledge to process what we are talking about.  A prime example is knowing the difference between cement and concrete. We are aware of the difference, and we assume that everyone else is too, so we don’t even question it. However, you may be surprised to learn how many students (and even professionals) are unaware of this simple distinction. These types of knowledge gaps aren’t just older to younger; they happen both ways.

When I was setting up the TV connection for one of my first presentations to the students, I couldn’t figure out how the volume button worked (I had guessed it was up and down); one of my students had to show me that the key moved side to side. Talk about embarrassing!

We should never assume that someone knows the topic we are discussing just because of their age or professional level. We have to make a point to meet people where they are and proceed from there. Real learning happens “brick by brick” with no shortcuts.

PCGS Blog: Precast Concrete's Importance in the Gulf South's Disaster-Prone Regions

The Gulf South is renowned for its breathtaking scenery, but nature also poses a persistent threat to the region. This area experiences frequent extreme weather, such as hurricanes, flooding, and strong winds. Safeguarding these communities requires more than just putting a plan in place; it also calls for strengthening existing structures. Fortifying this disaster-prone location with precast concrete can help ensure both safety and durability in the face of nature's difficulties. Precast concrete is a durable and long-lasting solution.

Bridge Academies-Pascagoula High School

The first-ever Bridge Academies Concrete/Prestressed Concrete program in Mississippi’s trade school history kicked off on August 1st, 2025. The program began with plant tours to three major precast plants and a ready-mix supplier. Design Precast in Gulfport started the tours with a look at the manufacturing of precast concrete pipe. Next, Tindall Corp in Moss Point, MS, showcased architectural precast and introduced the students to prestressing. To shake things up a bit, we made a detour to Delta Industries Ready-mix plant to show the students how concrete is made, mixed, and delivered. The students even took the opportunity to batch out concrete into a ready-mix truck!  Wrapping up the tour was a visit to Gulf Coast Prestress Partners in Pass Christian, which showcased transportation products such as girders and piles and introduced the students to the transportation of products by barge.

The program aims to educate students on concrete and explore the many ways it is used in the precast, prestressed industry.  It is also the program's goal to have students enter the industry and build careers around this wonderful product.

2025 PCI Committee Days

This year's PCI Committee Days returned to Rosemont, IL (near Chicago), with over 600 attendees, including producer members, associate members, academia, DOT personnel, and PCI employees.

As is customary during Committee Days, an awards ceremony is conducted, presenting many individual awards for excellence in our industry. One of those awards was bestowed on Jane Martin with Wells (formerly Gate Precast) in Monroeville, AL, for the PCI Marketing Individual Achievement Award. The PCI Marketing Individual Achievement Award is given to visionaries and creators who shape the marketing of the precast concrete industry. This award celebrates those whose tireless dedication and novel contributions have positively contributed to our industry’s marketing evolution. Congratulations Jane!

Of course, the entire event would not have been possible without the generous support of the many Associate and Professional members, who, along with the financial support of individual events, also lined the corridors of the conference center with tabletop displays and products for the producer members to view.

One of the real highlights of the entire week is the Concrete Chefs dinner at JVI’s headquarters on Thursday evening.  Jim Voss, owner of JVI, started the Concrete Chefs as a means to both promote and fundraise for the PCI Foundation. All ticket sales and proceeds benefit the Foundation, furthering the education of our future designers.
